CHARACTER INFO.
NAME: Futaba Sakura
CANON: Persona 5
AGE: 15
APPEARANCE: normal | as Oracle
CANON POINT: After Palace 7.

BACKGROUND: Wikipedia page, major plot spoilers.

Quick crash course for fewer spoilers: the protags of Persona 5 make up a group of high schoolers (and a cat) called the Phantom Thieves, who can enter metaphysical manifestations of peoples' minds (the Metaverse). By going into the Metaverse, they can find and—very literally—steal a person's corrupted desires, which compels them to atone for their wrongdoings in the real world.

PERSONALITY:

content warning: mentions of suicide

Persona 5's predominant theme is rebellion and fighting back—when she's first introduced under her internet alias, 'Alibaba,' Futaba seems a good fit. Alibaba is secretive and capable, willing to resort to a little wiretapping and blackmail to twist arms if she has to.

But this image fades quickly once the party finds the real Futaba: a teenage shut-in who barely ever leaves her house for fear of the outside world, interfacing with it solely through her computer. Her room's a disaster zone, she never started high school, and all-in-all, she's a hot mess, wracked by bouts of crippling guilt and sadness. She struggles day-to-day with depression and suicidal urges, and her implied future is extremely bleak if the Protagonist's crew fails to intervene.

That said, Futaba also has the strength to eventually break this cycle of self-loathing and anxiety—despite her intense fear of interacting with others face-to-face, she reaches out for someone to help her, hoping to change her situation and herself. To be fair, she does this a little menacingly (aforementioned Alibaba), but Futaba is truly a girl at the end of her rope when she's first introduced.

Rather than maliciousness, her issues stem largely from survivor's guilt, as she was repeatedly blamed for driving her mother to suicide—to the point that she believed it. When it's revealed that her mom was actually murdered, Futaba doesn't just find release from her guilt. She gets angry. She fights back, and she refuses to hide away anymore, determined to find the truth—she stands out in the Phantom Thieves as the only one who doesn't start fighting for 'justice,' emphasizing when she first joins that she's in this for answers.

This discovery sparks a major turning point for her. Futaba, armed with a support network and no longer burdened by her mother's suicide, is more or less... your average nerd. She's curt with strangers, sometimes prone to cut off conversation before it can begin, but she gets fired up over her hobbies and any other ridiculous subject that might catch a 15-year-old's attention. She loves chattering on about her favorite superhero, gently heckling her friends, getting heckled back, griefing people online (and in-person)... the works.

Because at heart, she's young and as silly as anyone her age is. Her youthful enthusiasm shows most once she grows comfortable with someone (which doesn't take as long as you'd think); she often invites Akira, the protagonist, to play video games or watch movies with her, and asks for him to accompany her outside so she can get used to the world again. Sometimes she isn't ready for it, but she always keeps trying, and she has a sort of wide-eyed wonder to new experiences that helps her along. When she feels safe around her company, she's often cheerful and animated, taking on a mischievous bent when she sees the opportunity.

Unfortunately, even if the source is patched over, years and years of social maladjustment don't get cured overnight. While Futaba makes vast strides over the course of the game, she still has trouble going out into crowds and shies away from strangers. And while she no longer literally collapses under the weight of her anxiety, she's uncomfortable going out alone, and often closes off to smalltalk (unless it's online). If someone is directly aggressive or confronts her, her impish silliness evaporates; she gets sad, evasive, and panicky, sometimes to the point of tears.

Still, Futaba is a vivacious trickster as much as any of the Thieves are, much more difficult to intimidate once her adrenaline gets going and there are people depending on her; even if she can't fight, she's always there to support her friends, deeply engaged in their adventures and constantly finding new ways to lend them her aid. She's able to keep her cool and helps Akira fool the traitor in their midst, even if it means being amiable with her mother's murderer for a while.

And despite her poor socialization and schooling, she's bright, often lauded as a genius; Futaba is a skilled hacker and programmer, and acts as the party's guru by analyzing the flow of battle, enemy weaknesses, and escape routes. She also provides them with the tech support they need in the real world, at one point having started her own internet hacking crew for shits and giggles (and a little do-gooding). All-in-all, Futaba is neither a braggart nor overly modest about her smarts, simply eager to talk tech when the opportunity arises. She's sharp and analytical, with a little attitude to boot. And these capabilities are often put to good use; the Phantom Thieves are vigilantes, and Futaba is willing to operate on the wrong side of the law to finish her tasks, casually hacking whatever she needs (or wants) to.

All-in-all, Futaba is a girl recently given a second chance at life, still learning how to interact meaningfully with the world beyond her computer screen. She's driven by anger, proclaiming that she'll never forgive the 'rotten' adults that tried to ruin everything for her, but still shows genuine pep and kindness to her friends—even if it means poking fun at them a little. Learning to stand up for herself and stop retreating from the world is tough, but she's getting there.

ABILITIES:
Futaba has very little in the way of formal schooling (she's young and pretty sure she can learn everything she needs to from the internet), but extremely quick on the uptake; she mentions she can memorize an entire row of book titles at a glance, and she overthrows a rival hacker organization alone with about a day's worth of code. She's unrealistically good with computers. It's extremely Anime, but the point is that she's smart and can learn very, very quickly.

Additionally, she has her persona, which works very similarly to a JRPG summon (a physical manifestation of her personality, which she can call forth and use abilities with). Futaba's persona, Necronomicon, is a bit different from the rest of the cast, completely lacking any offensive skills. Instead, she tends to hide inside of her persona (it's a UFO, it has a cockpit) and cast supportive spells from the sidelines. Her persona is capable of flight, but doesn't go super high, and can presumably be shot down.

These are very weird to translate from game mechanics, so I'll try my best to explain them, but please let me know if anything looks off-base or implausible!

Analysis: She's an expert at analyzing and memorizing enemy weaknesses (helped along by her persona), as well as how to use the surrounding terrain to escape or utilize it in the flow of battle. However, it takes some time and experience; she can't just look at something and know how to destroy it instantly.
Subrecover: She passively heals and recovers teammates when they're out of battle, which helps with stamina and to battle attrition. It's not a big, active ability.
Moral Support/Active Support: She has the rare benefit of having four area-wide support spells at her disposal, which means she can raise everyone's attack, agility, and defense, as well as heal them. Additionally, she can also charge another character's next attack, doubling its effectiveness, or help recover their magical stamina (basically what you'd consider mana, or MP).

However, these effects are somewhat random, so there's no real pattern to which spell you'll get. Persona support skills are also not huge, so even in the rare occasions she casts all her buffs at once, a person may find themselves faster, stronger, and sturdier than usual—but by no means invincible. It's a noticeable but not insane boost.
Mementos Scan: This is a bit canon-specific, but if possible I'd like her to keep it. Basically, she can sometimes analyze the layout of a floor she's on, more or less providing her a blueprint. It's random, only affects the floor she's on, and I would have it fail on anything plot substantial or if it'd make anything too easy!
Position Hack/Emergency Shift: When her teammates are caught in a critically bad formation (like, life or death bad), she can basically 'hack' reality to put them in a more advantageous position. Instead of messing with reality, I'd like to just make this so she can warp someone out of harm's way by a couple feet, or have two people switch places (with player permission!), and still only in emergencies. If it's too weird in general, please feel free to remove it too!
Treasure Reboot: Lets her refresh treasure that's around. I'm just going to ignore this one.
Second Awakening: With enough character development and ~~~bonds of friendship, Necronomicon can evolve into Prometheus (it's exactly like Pokemon). While it's feasible in-game development could push this to happen, it's largely ceremonial; it won't give her new abilities, it just makes her present ones a little bit stronger, and not by much.

INVENTORY:

▸ A couple sets of clothes
▸ Headphones
▸ Her phone (in canon this lets her access the Metaverse, but to avoid any jamjar weirdness this will be a perfectly normal cell phone)
▸ Her laptop and probably useless charger
▸ An old-school game console with a couple vintage vidya cartridges
▸ A mask
▸ Some action figures
▸ A container of garam masala, and a jar of unground coffee beans. Any leftover space in her duffel will be filled with cup noodles.

HATHAWAY.
SUITABILITY: Despite her age, Futaba's already been put through a rough gauntlet of action, personal loss, and close calls; she has plenty of growing to do for sure, but she can handle field work, always eager to support her team directly rather than always holding the fort at home. And it's already been shown that she's willing to face danger and bend rules to get what she deems necessary, so what's a bit of mercenary work? Though she's a softie at heart, Futaba's crew back home resorted to lawlessness, intimidation, and violence plenty often, so she isn't without some experience.

INCENTIVE: Help retrieving her mother's research. She'll probably have other requests along the way, but that'll work for now!

SPECIALIZATION:
SENTINEL: As a dedicated support character already, Futaba knows how to actively protect her crew and do everything in her power to make sure they survive a conflict. Being a sentinel would push her to understand people better as... people.
INVENTOR: The other half of her support skillset; she's big on analysis and very sharp, already well-versed in technology. She'd be able to pick up scientific concepts and mechanics quickly, so this would be more of a technical route for her.

No preference between the two!
